BJP on recent fuel price hike

The Bharatiya Janata Party will organise a series of agitations throughout the country to condemn the United Progressive Alliance government for increasing prices of petroleum products.

Terming the government's decision totally “unjustifiable,” Prakash Javadekar, BJP's national spokesperson, said at today's international prices, the cost of refined petrol at a retail outlet would be just Rs.25 a litre. But, the government had imposed various taxes making it Rs.50 a litre.

Addressing reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Javadekar said the hike would have a cascading effect on all transport costs, which, in turn, would increase prices of all essential commodities. Already the economy was witnessing a whopping inflation of nearly 20 per cent in food prices and this would increase further by 5 per cent.

The BJP spokesperson said both the Trinamool Congress and the DMK were also responsible for the price rise. The DMK's silence on the issue at the Group of Ministers meeting was a direct support for the increase in prices.

Regarding Bhopal gas leak tragedy, Mr. Javadekar said the GoM was in a hurry to protect Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister at the time of tragedy. Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson could not have escaped without the knowledge of Rajiv Gandhi.

The amount allotted by the GoM for the Bhopal victims was meagre compared to the magnitude of the tragedy and only 10 per cent of the victims would be benefitted.
