அ.தி.மு.கவா? காங்கிரஸா? குழப்பத்தில் அஜித்

Posted at September 28th, 2010 under News | No Comments »

Her Sinister Ring Tone

Tapped phone conversations have blown the lid off the liaisons that Niira Radia forged, the deals she fixed and the people she influenced. SHANTANU GUHA RAY reconstructs a life in the shadows

SHANTANU GUHA RAY

NIIRA RADIA, the lobbyist at the heart of India’s audacious multi-billion telecom swindle, inaugurated a Krishna temple she funded in south Delhi on her birthday — that, interestingly, coincides with Indira Gandhi’s.

Those present on the occasion said Radia prayed for long, presumably seeking divine intervention to wriggle out of the country’s biggest scandal. Before the temple visit, notices from the country’s Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax (IT) Department and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had reached her farmhouse on the fringes of south Delhi. The farmhouse is known to host both religious feasts and late night parties, to which Delhi’s swish set flock in equal numbers.

Time will tell whether the prayers will help Radia, the only female lobbyist among Delhi’s top-of-the-line power brokers. A picture of grace in both saris and business suits, her grasp of both human psychology and technical jargon gives her a comfort level with the rich and powerful as well as wannabes.

She grew with the BJP, made inroads into the Congress inner circle, and vibed well with the CPM. But she alienated her own staff with her workaholism, constantly egging them on with the Nike tagline, “Just do it”. Her personal wealth is whispered to be around Rs. 500 crore but that is difficult to establish.

Interestingly, in what started out as a telephone tap by the IT Department’s Directorate General of Investigations to probe violations related to TDS (tax deducted at source) has turned into a full-scale, multi-agency inquiry by the government about whether Radia is so embedded in Delhi’s politics that she can make/unmake ministers or manipulate government policy to suit powerful corporate clients.

What the ED is trying to establish is the money trails that seem to wind through her corporate communications venture. Knowing this, she avoided, on medical grounds, the first set of notices sent to her, using the time to get politicians in Uttar Pradesh to silence the bureaucrats from that state’s cadre who are investigating the scam. But no one wants to get embroiled in the Rs. 1.76 lakh crore telecom scam.

Encouraged by her political isolation, the investigating agencies sent her another set of notices demanding — this time in strong language — her presence for a detailed probe. Perhaps to avoid the media, she landed at the ED office at 9.15 am on 24 November, even before her interrogators reported for work. “We are investigating what could be one of India’s biggest scandals,” is all Rajeshwar Singh, a top investigator with the ED, was willing to tell TEHELKA. By the time she emerged from the office, the media had arrived in full force, and she addressed the barrage of questions with the polish and panache expected of a public relations professional. Which means, of course, that she smoothly gave the impression of being willing to cooperate without actually giving any real information away.

CBI OFFICIALS claim they have evidence that she once worked with data servers hosted out of Ukraine and had latest Israeli anti-surveillance gizmos running on the telephones used by her and her close aides. The agency has in its possession 180 hours of candid conversations that Radia, as chairperson of Vaishnavi Corporate Communications — and its sister organisations like Vitcom, Neucomp, and Neosys — had with politicians, bureaucrats and a handful of high-profile journalists. These could put her at the heart of the telecom scam that claimed the cabinet berth of Andimuthu Raja, who is accused of selling lucrative licences at dirt-cheap prices.

The CBI is also probing what it calls her nexus with a slew of former bureaucrats whose brains she picked to bend rules to the benefit of her clients. These included conglomerates like the Tatas, Reliance, ITC and Mahindras, and big-bucks entities like Lavasa, Star TV, Unitech, Elder Health Care, Haldia Petrochemicals, Emami and the HIV/AIDS initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

This week, one of her confidants, Pradip Baijal, the former telecom and disinvestment secretary who started the country’s much-hyped disinvestment process, was questioned by the CBI for over four hours for his alleged investments in African nations like Guinea and Senegal.

“The charges are serious,” admits ED’s Rajeshwar Singh, refusing to reveal details. CBI and ED officials told TEHELKA that there is enough evidence to prove Radia’s links with retired bureaucrats like Ajay Dua, former secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), CM Vasudev, former finance secretary, SK Narula, former Airports Authority of India chairman, and Akbar Jung, the former civil aviation secretary.

Judgement day Justice B Padmaraj will probe the land scams

Tricky tie-ups Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata helped Radia succeed while Dayanidhi Maran was on the wrong side and Praful Patel an enemy

The IT investigations revealed that apart from managing the telecom licences for builder Unitech, among others, Radia also handled and facilitated cross-border transfer of funds. Intercepted conversations between Radia and the allottees of the new telecom licences suggest that she was a key adviser in staggering the inflow of funds from outside India so that no impression could be created that there was a windfall gain to the companies.

ED officials have told TEHELKA they have evidence that Radia was instrumental in sourcing funds — as much as Rs. 1,600 crore — for Unitech, one of the controversial beneficiaries of the telecom licences. The company eventually sold a majority stake in the telecom venture to Norway’s Telenor for seven times the licence fee it paid.

Worse, some of the conversations link Radia to Anil Agarwal of the London-based Vedanta group that has drawn flak for violating environmental norms at its billion-dollar mining projects in Orissa’s Kalahandi district.

It is reliably learnt that the Vendanta group used Radia to erase what it claimed was a negative mindset about the group and its operations in India. As a result, expensive advertisements extolling the virtues of Vedanta were published in newspapers and newsmagazines. But these did not cut much ice since the project was scrapped by environment minister Jairam Ramesh.

Tellingly, the tapes also establish her links with Sunil Arora, an IAS officer based in Rajasthan and used by Radia to gain access to his batchmates in various ministries. The conversations are a part of the CBI notes to the Supreme Court.

Arora, who sacrificed his second tenure as chairman and managing director (CMD) of Indian Airlines by attempting to blow the whistle on Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, seems to have opened many doors for Radia across India. During his tenure as the CMD of Indian Airlines (2003-05), seven aircraft leases were found to have been channelled to companies that had Radia’s front companies acting as agents. “We have evidence that substantial payments were made to Arora’s Meerut-based brother by Radia’s company,” said Akshat Jain, a senior IT official.

For the record, Niira was born to Sudesh and Iqbal Memon, a trader who was born a Hindu, on 19 November 1960. Niira — the extra ‘i’ was added on the advice of numerologists — and her family had to flee Africa around the time of the fall of Idi Amin. Once touted as an emerging competitor to infamous gun dealer Adnan Khashoggi, Memon changed track in London and opened an aviation lease broking business.

The natural heir to the family business, Radia also worked with Scotland Yard on a job-to-job basis providing escort cover to its young recruits. In London, she married Janak Radia of a wealthy trading family. At some point, she was also marestried to the grandson of Rao Birendra Singh, Haryana’s chief minister in the 1960s, and went by the name of Niira Yadav.

In 1996, Radia fled to India from UK after a host of shell companies with paid-up capital as low as £100 went bust and came under scrutiny for money laundering.

First she worked with Sahara supremo Subrata Roy’s blue-eyed boy Uttam Kumar Bose, who was managing Air Sahara. “She worked with us for some time,” admits Abhijit Sarkar, one of the directors of Sahara India. But Bose fell out of favour with Roy when aircraft lease rentals were found to be as much as 50 percent higher than market rates. Thereafter, Radia ventured out on her own. She harboured an ambition to take over the defunct ModiLuft and rename it Magic Air, but failed to get the necessary clearances.

There are many who claim Niira still nurses a grudge against Naresh Goyal and Praful Patel for bringing her flights of fancy to naught

Undaunted, she tied up with aircraft leasing companies to get planes at the lowest prices and secured in-principle approvals for parking slots and peak time schedules between metros from the state-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI). However, at every step she was outwitted by the powerful private airlines lobby that ensured that her Gulf-based financiers pulled out. The crack team of pilots and aviation professionals she had picked up from leading airlines, including Malaysian Airlines, disintegrated after a long frustrating standby.

There are many who claim Radia still nurses a grudge against Jet Airways head Naresh Goyal and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel for bringing her flights of fancy to naught. While Radia never got security clearance as the promoter for Crown Air, she came in close contact with the then aviation minister Ananth Kumar of the BJP.

Sources in the BJP leadership point out that Radia decided that Crown Air had reached a dead end when she got clear signals from the PMO that Kumar was under a cloud. Nevertheless, Radia managed to get a large tract of land at unbelievably low prices during the NDA regime in the name of Sudesh Foundation, a charity in her late mother’s memory.

An old IB report points that some of the objections against giving security clearance to Radia came from her dealings with a Mumbai-based person of doubtful background, Chandu Panjabi, who was also close to the first family of the Shiv Sena.

Radia played a role in funding Agnisaakshi, a movie produced by Binda Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. Panjabi was close to the Thackeray family and is tipped to have been a former part-owner of Sea Rock Hotel in Bandra. (Sea Rock was one of the sites bombed in the 1992 serial blasts in the city. The property, which changed hands multiple times, is now run by the Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company.)

With a never-say-die attitude and assiduous networking, Radia developed a close rapport with Singapore Airlines, helping it set up a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in India. The change in government policy that disallowed foreign airlines to enter India was also rumoured to have been at the behest of her foes Goyal and Patel.

RADIA’S CHARISMA, connect with bureaucrats and politicians and alliance with Kumar opened many doors for her in Delhi’s bhawans. A former AAI chairman and a powerful bureaucrat during the NDA government, SK Narula, remains a close ally post-retirement, handling some crucial government liaisons on her behalf.

It is believed that the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan played a crucial role in helping the Tata-led management invest Rs. 1,200 crore of VSNL’s reserves in the ailing Tata Teleservices. Radia, after three-four long meetings with Mahajan, not only managed to build bridges between him (then telecom minister) and the Tata group, but also ensured that the VSNL board proposal — earlier termed as asset stripping by Mahajan — got cleared with minor modifications.

Radia’s biggest break came when she got acquainted with Ratan Tata’s close aide RK Krishna Kumar, the man trusted by Tata to translate his airline dreams into reality.

The Tata-Singapore Airlines alliance failed but soon Radia made her bigger debut in the world of public relations — she had earlier owned an agency called The Big League — and formed Vaishnavi, which got the mandate to handle all Tata companies. With the name of India’s most respected business house behind her, Radia started a new journey and shaped her company into an eight-city operation.

When the Tata Group wanted criminal proceedings to be initiated against Dilip Pendse of Tata Finance and these attempts were foiled by his playing the ‘Marathi Manoos’ card, he was picked up by the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police in a much smaller case. He alleged the show was directed by none other than Radia, for one of the key aspects of her strategy was to establish inroads in the police department, an instrument she uses subtly yet frequently to settle scores. So much so, a staffer has been deployed for the past eight years only to maintain rapport with ground-level policemen while Radia chats up senior officials. Having a hotline with top IPS officers in important cities is, in fact, a USP Radia offers her clients.

FORMER DELHI Commissioner of Police KK Paul was a close friend of Radia’s, and got his post under the NDA four months before the Congress-led UPA came to power. When a former Maharashtra DGP was made to quit the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner overnight in February 2007, there was a strong buzz that Radia was lobbying hard to get him a plush posting at the CBI or an intelligence agency in Delhi. Intelligence sources do not rule out Radia’s hand in the controversy surrounding former Mumbai police commissioner Hassan Gafoor, who was the top choice to become Maharashtra DGP before a damaging interview appeared in a leading weekly magazine. The beneficiary of the Gafoor controversy was none other than Anami Narayan Roy, a close relative of Tata Motors chief Ravi Kant.

While the reason given for Roy’s exit as Mumbai police commissioner was the change of Mumbai Police logo without approvals, there is a strong buzz that he came under scrutiny for helping Tata Communications in a case where there was prima facie evidence of the company providing back-end infrastructure and being in full knowledge of an illegal international calling operation being run out of Larsen & Toubro’s information technology arm’s premises in Mumbai. The investigating team, including Mumbai Police’s brightest sleuth Kishore Gayake — who had spearheaded the investigation — was transferred from Unit 8 of the Crime Branch overnight and later resigned under protest. Incidentally, Roy stays in a plush South Mumbai residential complex, with three-four bigwigs of the Tata group, including Kant, as neighbours.

Interestingly, Radia revived her dream of a commercial airline in late 2004 and brought in a team of aviation professionals, yet again from Malaysian Airlines, headed by Ng Fook Meng, who was a part of the erstwhile Crown Air and was denied security approval by the Indian government. In spite of her bête noire Praful Patel being the aviation minister and Ajay Prasad the secretary, the optimistic Radia took the plunge in a battle she finally had to give up after 14 months of efforts.

It was around this time that Radia fought a bitter, hostile battle with Dayanidhi Maran, who was upset with Ratan Tata’s reported patronage of maverick businessman C Sivasankaran. The enterprising Radia located a confidant of DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s wife Rajathi Ammal, and developed a rapport with her in the course of a number of visits to Chennai. Her biggest break came when a rift developed between the Marans and the Karunanidhi family, which resulted in the suave and progressive Dayanidhi Maran’s unceremonious exit from the telecom ministry. It is believed that Radia once flew to Chennai and organised a closed-door meeting between the DMK supremo, his son MK Stalin and Tata.

Radia is believed to have engineered a privilege motion against Praful Patel in Parliament’s monsoon session of 2005. An unheard of periodical, UT Independent, saw a sudden increase in circulation after dubbing the suave Patel India’s bidi king.

The biggest missing link in Radia’s operation was a full-fledged “think tank” that would take her to the big league of reasoned lobbying. Former AAI CMD Narula, who was parked in Radia’s Magic Air hangar, came handy in building inroads to top-level bureaucrats, who in their mid- 50s start looking for post-retirement opportunities with corporate India.

Despite Radia’s magic not working on former AAI executive director Gurcharan Bhatura, Narula is believed to have been the key man in getting two high-profile bureaucrats in Radia’s corner.

Poles apart, the controversial Baijal and the low-profile Vasudev, the former DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion) secretary, were good cornerstones of Radia’s dreams of managing the bureaucracy. Rewarding Narula for having stuck around — he was also the non-executive chairmanship of Magic Air — Radia floated Neosys with Baijal, Vasudev and Narula as partners. In no time, a couple of Chinese companies including telecom major Huawei were being advised by Radia’s company.

THE SUDDEN rise of Radia, her frequent visits to Singapore and the prospective investors from West Asia and the Asia-Pacific raised many an eyebrow. Reportedly, some of the large cash transactions were found to be routed through a code name resembling hers.

With India’s two largest industrialists as her clients, earning her a rumoured Rs. 100 crore per annum, Niira left every established player behind

At the same time, her unhindered growth surprised many. Windfall gains came from managing a massive Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) public relations mandate from Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man. Radia formed Neucom to manage the RIL account. With India’s two largest industrialists in her fold, earning her a rumoured Rs 100 crore per annum, Radia left every established player far behind within six years of setting up shop.

Like some other public relations firms based in Delhi, Radia too branched out from working with corporates to doing PR for state governments. She worked closely with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Naidu hired Radia for “strategic PR counsel” for Andhra Pradesh during his last stint while it is rumoured that she was instrumental in getting Tata’s Nano project out of a volatile Bengal and into Gujarat.

If the spectrum scam weren’t so big, with its potential to swallow many careers, one would say that this savvy survivor has enough fire in her belly to keep going. But the business she is in requires the confidence of both politicians and corporates and they’re in it for money, not love. Besides, it doesn’t pay to work with someone whose image is sullied.

Vivekananda and Communist propaganda

By arisebharat

Visions of a Hindu India
Author: Dina Nath Mishra; Publication: Sunday
Date: May 2-8, 1993

Shocked by the events in Ayodhya on 6 December last year and the subsequent political developments, both the communist parties demonstratingly came out lecturing the Sangh Parivar about the real Hinduism through booklets, one by Sitaram Yechury, the CPI(M) Politburo
member, and another by the CPI secretary, A. B. Bardhan.

It is a case of traditional Hindu-haters turning to be real Hindus and pushing Hindus to the category of pseudo-Hindus. Two booklets provided the basis to the left media brigade to shout the same propaganda all over India through print and other media again and again. The whole edifice of propaganda was demolished by two well- researched articles by Arun Shourie in SUNDAY (Myths about the Swami, 31 January – 6 February, 1993 and Quotable quotes, 7 – 13 February, 1993). The burden of Shourie’s pieces were, as put by Shourie himself in conclusion:

“…lessons upon lessons for friends who suddenly find Swami Vivekanand so quotable. Stray quotations cannot be set up to counter the entire life and work of such a man; as that life and work is the exact opposite of what you have been propagating, the more you lean on Vivekananda, the more he will recoil on you; never forget what you have been saying about a man when you suddenly find him handy, other are not likely to have forgotten; and finally, never proclaim your intention to quote a man before you have read him.”

Shourie’s pieces were too powerful and aggressive to be ignored by the communist parties and hence a laboured rebuttal in SUNDAY (Of Shourie and Vivekananda, 28 March – 3 April 1993) by A. B. Bardhan, who has made the following points:

That they have not jumped suddenly but their approach to Swami’s role and world view are very much positive. In his effort to prove that the communists have not suddenly jumped to quote Vivekananda, but have been doing so for long, Bardhan quotes from a book published by the CPI titled. Socio-political views of Vivekananda by Benoy Roy in 1970. BenoyRoy was profusely quoted to clarify the party’s assessment of Vivekananda.

* That as Marxists we hail his revolutionary and humanist teachings as inspiring message to the people of India and the world.

* That communists are not alienated and keep themselves aloof from our culture. To substantiate this, Mr Bardhan has marshalled names of communist and other writers including Rahul Sanskrityayan, S.A. Dange, Ram Bilas Sharma and has reminded us of their contributions.

* That Vivekananda was a revolutionary, a socialist and a secular person.

* That Arun Shourie has made a Muslim crusader out of Vivekananda and Shourie’s and she Sangh Parivar’s views are just opposite to that of Vivekananda.

* That there is enough food and ammunition in Vivekananda’s works to last all who are searching for India’s social, cultural and spiritual development. Let no one try to appropriate him for oneself.” Vivekananda is not the monopoly of the Sangh Parivar and Arun Shourie.

* That the communist approach to Vivekananda underlines the enlightenment of the downtrodden, dumb millions, his revolutionary approach to the problem of liquidating the privileges of the propertied classes and giving the toilers their due share in the national wealth, his preachings against untouchability. and. above all, his teachings purification of the soul – they were all later adopted by different political and social organisations of this country, including the Indian National Congress led by M.K. Gandhi.

Now let us face the facts. On pages 391-392 of the Documents of history of the CPI published in 1971, there is an assessment of Vivekananda by the party. “Although its political philosopher and leader were found subsequently in the persons of Aurobindo Ghose and Bipin Chandra Pal respectively, its fundamental ideology was conceived by a young intellectual of petit-bourgeoisie origin. He was Narendra Nath Dutt, subsequently, known by the religious nomenclature of Swami Vivekananda. Like Tilak, Dutt was also a prophet of Hindu nationalism. He was also a believer in the cultural superiority of the Indian people, and held that on this cultural basis should be built the future Indian nation’ He preached that Hinduism, not Indian nationalism, should be aggressive. His nationalism was spiritual imperialism.”

Now Mr Bardhan, please tell me: Was Vivekananda a believer of Hindu nationalism or was he a secular person of your variety? Were you right then or now? Was he an intellectual of petit bourgeoisie origin, or were his ideas food and ammunition for various developments of the nation as claimed by Benoy Roy and which was quoted in your rebuttal? Was Shourie not right in accusing you and your colleagues for suddenly alighting upon Swami Vivekananda?

I will give you yet another instance. Please turn to page 393 of the party document, where the following appears. “Thus an intelligently rebellious element which otherwise would have been the vanguard of the exploited class in a social struggle had to give in to national preoccupations and contribute itself to a movement for the immediate overthrow of foreign rule, not for progress forward, but in order to go back to an imaginary golden age the fountain-head of India’s spiritual heritage … In their religiousness and wild spiritual’ imperialism they embodied the reactionary social forces.”

Mr Bardhan. my simple question is: Was Vivekananda a revolutionary or a reactionary as your party document says? Do you stand by your party document or a single comrade’s view expressed in Socio-political views of Vivekananda:” …his revolutionary approach to the problem of liquidating the privileges of the propertied classes and giving the toilers their due share in the national wealth… ” Where do you stand? Did he overlook the immediate overthrow of foreign rule or has he a very special position in inspiring the freedom fighters of the Freedom Movement as mentioned in your rebuttal?

You quoted Mahatma Gandhi in defence of your new-found love for Vivekananda. I am quoting your party document: “The extremists, now called non-cooperators. have had better success than moderates in drawing the masses under the influence of nationalism … But they could not develop the potentiality of the mass movement by leading it in accordance with its economic urges and social tendencies. Their tactics was to strengthen the nationalist movement by the questionable method of exploiting the ignorance of the masses. And the best way of exploiting tire ignorance of the masses was to make a religion of nationalism. This tactics led to the appearance of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on the political horizon, and the eclipse of all other politico- social tendencies in the shade of Gandhism.”

So, is it not the same as the charge you are levelling: that Shourie and the Sangh Parivar are making a religion of nationalism? And mixing religion with politics, the “crime” which Mahatma Gandhi also committed?

Veteran communist leader R. Palme Dutt wrote in 1931 that “to all that is young and generous in India the name of Gandhi is an object of cursing and contempt, the name of Judas”. This must be strongly combatted by the communists.

No, Mr Bardhan. the Sangh Parivar and Arun Shourie did not and do not monopolise Vivekananda. While you threw Vivekananda in the dust bin like a rotten egg, calling him a “wild spiritualist”, the Sangh Parivar found in him the biggest asset in the exercise of nation-building. The relationship of Vivekananda with the Sangh movement is very much like a mother-son relationship. Dr Hedgewar, the RSS founder, was a Tilakite.

The second Saranghchalak, Sri Guruji, was in Ram Krishna Mission for two or three years around 1935. One of the most revered central leaders of the RSS, Baba Saheb Apte’s life-long pet sentence was: “Vivekananda is like Gita for the RSS.”

Vivekananda’s literature has always been staple intellectual diet for swayamsewavaks since the early 40s. When the centenary year of Vivekananda was approaching, the RSS entrusted to Eknath Ranade the job of compiling Vivekananda’s thoughts into a handy volume. Ranade adopted it as a one-dimensional mission and brought out the vision of Vivekananda in a book titled, “Rousing call to Hindu nation”, first published in 1963. The 168-page book costs Rs 2. Since then, it has been translated into all Indian languages and underwent numerous reprints.

Over a million copies have been sold so far among the RSS people. Add to that booklets brought out by various publications. “Rousing call to Hindu nation” has been like a textbook and motivating vision for all swayamsevaks. Mr Bardhan, you have flaunted a quotation of lower caste exploitation and taunted if Shouries and the Sangh Parivar agree to it. Let me add here that the textbook I just spoke about contains admonitions of the upper classes of India. There are numerous quotations like that you have quoted and is not tactical.

The study of Vivekananda convinced Eknath Ranade to build the Vivekananda Rock Memorial temple at Kanya Kumari – the rock where the Swami had meditated in 1893 before going to Chicago. This grand memorial came up only after crossing hundreds of hurdles set up by almost all political parties and many groups. Literally, crores of people contributed to the dream of the rock memorial. Should I remind you, Mr. Bardhan, that all the state government had contributed to that end, barring the one you had in Kerala led by E.M.S. Namboodiripad, despite the best efforts of Eknathji. Let me remind you that when Ranade approached Jyoti Basu for help, the latter questioned. “How dare you come to me for Vivekananda, I am a communist”. But finding Eknathji persuasive, Jyoti Basu told him, “Meet my wife, she had gone to Kanya Kumari when I went to the Ernakulam convention.” Comrade Kalyana Sundaram of Tamil Nadu greeted Eknathji thus: “You have defeated me by coming to me because I was telling my friends that you will not come to me as you know I am a communist. You know I am very much inspired by Vivekananda”. Eknathji had collected signatures of more than 50 per cent MPs to remove the hurdles in the construction work. In the process. The only enthusiastic support that came from “your camp”, was that of comrade Renu Chakravorty, MP, who got a few signatures of other communist MPs, too.

There is no need of reminding you from how many textbooks you removed Vivekananda in West Bengal when you came to power in that state. No, Mr.Bardhan, there is no intention of monopolising Vivekananda. He was not an RSS member. He was the finest Hindu model produced at the end of last century after waves and waves of Hindu awakening from Bhakti Movement to 19th Century renaissance in Bengal and other places. His vision was basically Hindu and was meant for the whole of humanity. You can very well quote Vivekananda provided you apologise for calling him names. Till then, you are just ineligible to quote him.

As to your challenge that Arun Shourie’s and the Sangh Parivar’s vision of Vivekananda is that of a crusader against Islam, etc. I can only say that you believe your own propaganda that the party’s reflexes do not work and are generally delayed by at least 50 yews. Did you concede your mistake of 1942 before 1970? You were confused about Vivekananda as late as 1990. You started rethinking about him in the late Sixties In a half-hearted manner. It was under your pressure that many references of the word ‘Hindu’ were removed from the latest edition of the eight volumes on Vivekananda, though they existed in earlier editions. Let me remind you that the son of Bipin Chandra Pal substituted the word. “Hindu” with “Indian” in the works of his father. Even today, your acceptance of Vivekananda is not general in nature but partial and that is why you say: “We have never pretended to be Vedantists, and have remained Marxists … as Marxists….we hail his teachings (and) …..inspiring message….” There is a definite anti-Hindu trait in saying. “We are not Vedantists” and yet you quote Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech in full, which is nothing but uniquely Vedantic. And that is Arun Shourie says: “Stray quotations cannot be set up to counter the entire life and work of such man.”

Did Muslims vote for BJP in Bihar – An Analysis by Vishnu Prasad

By arisebharat

Muslims voted for BJP in BIhar – A myth challenged – An Analysis by Vishnu Prasad

“For the first time since 2002, Muslims rallied behind BJP”, screaming Media for the last few days. Will BJP learn its lessons? Questions analysts after the triumph in Bihar . BJP needs a Vajpayee and a Nitish, not Modi, laments the anchors. And the poor reader taken for a ride and started believing that BJP should change, should leave Modi behind and embrace Nitish for success. But a deeper insight into the results will astonish anyone and espouse the fact that it was not Nitish’s sort of Victory, but it was Modi’s indeed.

Since some in the group raised their eyebrows about ballyhoo of the media, I felt like taking a look into it and here is my take.

I took 54 Muslim influenced constituencies in which Muslim voters exceeded 20% and tried to analyze in which way these Muslims voted. I tried to figure out that did Muslims really vote for Nitish?
( Data in link below)

Bihar Election data 2010

Did Nitish Charisma really helped BJP pulling miraculous victories in these Muslim majority constituencies?

Or, Is it the underground polarization of Hindus against Muslims in the wake of Prince Rahul gandhi’s uncalled for statements equating RSS with SIMI just a week ahead of Polls?

One has to analyze the data keeping the backdrop of the elections that were held in the wake of Ayodhya verdict, Congress’ blatant siding with Muslims and Targeting RSS amongst many others.

Here are my findings

1.Of these 54 constituencies, BJP contested in 32 and won a whopping 29 as against those of JDU’s 12 out of a total contested 22.

2.Of those 29, in 16 seats BJP won against Muslim candidates and 15 of those candidates were Hindus. The only Muslim candidate won from Amour, which is 75% Muslims and here too the margin of victory when put against the combined LJP-Congress duo, is a mere 2000 votes. ( Yet this can be an exception to my claim)

3.in all the three seats where BJP lost, BJP lost to Muslim candidates and all those defeated were Hindus. And all these three constituencies have more than 45% Muslim votes. Interestingly, in Kishangunj, where Muslims are 65%, BJP lost by a mere 244 votes and amassed the votes almost equal to polled Hindu votes ( proportionately calculated) and 65% Muslim votes seem to be exactly got divided between Congress and RJD.

4.On the other hand, look at the fate of the Nitish led JDU. JDU has lost 10 out of 22 seats contested. More interesting is the way it lost. Of the 10 seats it lost, it lost 5 seats to Muslim candidates.

5. In another 4 seats it lost, JDU fielded muslim candidates keeping the demography in view but surprisingly lost to Hindu candidates.

What do these results suggest? One plausible explanation could be that Hindu vote bank got consolidated while Muslims were confused and scattered between Congress and RJD but surely not rallied behind BJP, and definitely not behind Nitish as claimed by the secular media. But unfortunately our minds have been so trained that we could not dare to imagine that Hindu vote bank could be consolidated and throw the mlechha out.

True , development could have been one, in fact the biggest, factor but never undermine the undercurrent of Hindu renaissance. To me , Bihari voter has categorically answered the secular media and secular leaders too, with one go. Enough of belittling Hindu cause, Hindu leaders and Hindu organizations.

With their voice loud and clear, They avowed “What if you don’t welcome Shri Narendra Modiji, we do.”

I hope Nitish and secular media listening.

Barkha Dutt exposed – Media persons & Politicians nexus

By arisebharat

Barkha Dutta the face of NDTV was exposed brokering the recent political deal between the DMK and Congress. It is a pathetic state of affairs in India where the NDTV which is supposed to stand for integrity and honesty is getting into downright brokering deals.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Since the media itself is in cahoots with the political class, can the Indians believe the news doled out by the English channels like NDTV.

Arise Bharat…throw these traitors out of business if not out of Bharat.

Karunanidhi for Prime Minister?

K. Chezhian

I could not believe what I read in the newspaper. I called the Weather Bureau and asked them if hell had frozen over? They said "no". I looked out the window to see if donkeys were flying. No. I dropped a book from the table. It fell to the floor; it did not go up. So gravity is still working. Everything seems to be normal. Hell has not frozen. Donkeys are not flying. Gravity is still operational. But what is it that I am reading in the newspaper?

"During his speech at Vizhupuram (Tamil Nadu) on February 16, 1998 Chief Minister Karunanidhi recited a Hindi poem about religious harmony", said the newspaper. Karunanidhi, protector of Tamils from Hindi imposition, whose political life started with him leaving school and joining an anti-Hindi protest some 50 years ago, reciting a Hindi poem at a public meeting? There is nothing wrong in a Tamil reciting a Hindi poem or speaking in Hindi on his or her own volition, without any compulsion from government. That is not the issue here. Karunanidhi had never spoken in Hindi at a public meeting, not even in the few speeches he had made in the north. So, why recite a Hindi poem now?

Until last year Karunanidhi never aspired to become the Prime Minister of India. In fact, until the fortunes of the Congress Party dimmed and there was no all-India party to replace it, he did not even think that his party, the DMK, could get a cabinet position in the central government. The waning political fortunes of the Congress Party, the ascendance of coalition governments and his party getting cabinet positions at the center are now history. Even then, he did not aspire to become the Prime Minister because he would not be acceptable to the Hindi belt; he, and the DMK as well, are closely linked with the anti-Hindi movement in Tamil Nadu. Neither he nor anyone from DMK would be acceptable to Hindi-belt politicians.

So Karunanidhi wanted to soften his anti-Hindi image. It is within this context that one should look at him reciting a Hindi poem at the election meeting at Vizhupuram. A great Tamil scholar that he is (he truly is a great Tamil scholar), couldn't he find an appropriate Tamil poem about religious harmony? I can recite a dozen, off-hand. Karunanidhi did not recite that Hindi poem for the benefit of the Tamil audience at the meeting; most of them do not understand Hindi. It was intended for the Hindi politicians in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. He wanted to show the Hindi-belt politicians that he is no longer the anti-Hindi stalwart that he once was. In the opinion of this writer he will never be offered the Prime Minister position in spite of these little tricks.

Chief Minister Karunanidhi should seriously consider if he wants to lose the monkey in his hands chasing after the wild donkey in the fields? He has the monkey (chief minister position) for quite sometime now. His party came to power in the state because of the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation. He chooses to stir anti-Hindi feelings in Tamil Nadu whenever he could make political mileage out of it, and that does help him and his party often. Now, in the hope of catching the donkey (Prime Minister position), if he were to soften his anti-Hindi stance, he may lose some of his political base. It may not be long before AIADMK, MDMK, PMK and other assorted political parties pointing out Karunanidhi's little Hindi-poem recitation in Vizhipuram to the people. Someone like MDMK's Vaiko or PMK's Ramadoss or even AIADMK's Jayalalitha could snatch the anti-Hindi mantle from Karunanidhi and run with it, even all the way to the Chief Minister's chair!

The "Wise" Laloo Yadvji

The most intelligent person

Once Laloo Yadav, Sonia Gandhi, a saint and a schoolboy were travelling by a private plane. Suddenly the engine caught fire and the pilot came out shouting,

"This plane is going to crash! And we have only four parachutes and there are five of us in the plane. Since I am a very important Indian Airlines pilot I am taking one parachute and getting out of here." Saying this he rushed to the luggage area grabbed one parachute and jumped offthe plane.

Sonia Gandhi said, "Since I am the future Prime Minister of India I am very important and have to live!" She also grabbed a parachute and jumped.

Laloo Yadav said, "I am the king-maker of this country, the most honest politician of India and above all the most intelligent person living in this country, and the most intelligent person must live!" Saying so Laloo went to the luggage area, grabbed one and jumped off the plane.

The old saint said to the school boy, "There is only one parachute left, and there are two of us. I am an old man and don't need to live any more. You take the last parachute and jump.

"The school boy said, "don't worry! There are still two parachutes left with us! The most intelligent person, Laloo Yadav, jumped off the plane with my school bag!"

WHY SONIA AS OUR PRIME MINISTER IS A NATIONAL CALAMITY ?

By arisebharat

This is an article written in 2004 when Sonia Gandhi was projected as a Prime ministerial candidate. Some of the material is summarised from material collected from Dr.Subramanya Swamy and Sri Gurumurthy’s articles. Some of the predictions that Rahul Gandhi would become the General secretary of the congress have come true and it does seem that the dangers that are before the nation remain.

WHY SONIA AS OUR PRIME MINISTER IS A NATIONAL CALAMITY ? – Written in May 2004

Over the past few months, and more so over the last few days the debate on whether Sonia (Antonia Maino) should be allowed to become Prime Minister of the World’s largest democracy, Bharat is under fierce debate.

People who defend her say that our culture has always been open and those who oppose her are narrow-minded and insult the women folk of our country since she is our “bahu”.

As an attempt to explain why we are opposed to Sonia ( Antonia Maino) as Prime Minister of our country, we have listed some of the issues that require examination. We request you to read them and decide for yourself whether you can accept her as the Prime Minister of our country OR would join us in our effort to expose and oust her thereby keeping the pride of our nation high.

1.The Prime Minister & Access To Nuclear Weapons :

The Prime Minister handles a particular file, which contains all the secrets of the government. Where the nuclear weapons are , where the missiles are, who can press the button, which missile points in which direction, who are our spy links in different countries? This single file contains all this information. That file is not handled by anybody other than the Prime Minister of India. If it falls into wrong hands, it will strip India naked before inimical forces. `Can we afford to hand over these secrets to her? ` Even the Defence Minister cannot do anything; he cannot look at that file. Even the services chiefs know only their part of the secret. The combined, collective national secret would be in the hands of this foreigner.

2. Sonia’s Relation With India :

a. Citizenship: Unlike foreigners like Sister Nivedita & Annie Beasant, Sonia’s love was not with our country but with Rajiv Gandhi. Compare Nivedita with Sonia Maino. When Sonia came to India in 1968, she was wedded to an Indian who was the son of our Prime Minister. She did not apply for Indian citizenship in 1968 when she married Rajiv and came to India. She applied for India Citizenship in 1983 only when a case was filed against her that it was improper to have a foreigner living permanently in the prime minister’s house.

b. Spy Connections: It has been alleged that she had connections with the Italian spy network since 1968. She even brokered a security deal for Indira Gandhi’s bullet-proof car through her brother at Italy. The car was contracted from Germany.

c. Lack of faith on India: When Rajiv Gandhi was alive, the security of their entire family was organized by Italian security agencies. Jack Kunzi, Commissioner of Police at Geneva taunted a RAW official “Your Prime Minister’s wife does not seem to trust you or your embassy. She gets the security for her children co-ordinated by Italians.” George, her secretary, used to directly communicate to western agencies through Italian Embassy in Delhi and the Italian foreign office in Rome.

d. Her Bofors Connection : . Among those who are the suspected beneficiaries of the Bofors deal is Ottavio Quattrocchi, Italian family friend of Sonia Gandhi, who tried to cut into the commissions, Bofors were paying to their long time agent

e. Land Grabbing: She showed immense cunning after her husband’s demise in starting the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. She grabbed the land allotted to the Congress party for its national headquarters. During the Narsimha Rao government, she got allocated one billion rupees even as part of the nation’s gold lay mortgaged abroad. She has since then obtained total control over the wealthiest cultural institution of the country, having a corpus of one billion rupees and 21 acres of prime land in New Delhi valued at 50 billion rupees.

f. Abandoning the Country During Crisis: During the 1971 War, she ran away with her husband breaching the discipline of commercial pilots.

3. The Mystery Behind Her & Her Pretensions: How she met Rajiv Gandhi in England? What she was doing in England when she met him is still a mystery. She brought her family into the security matters of India even when Indira was alive. She forced Italian security on India even when Rajiv Gandhi was alive. She openly distrusted Indian security and diplomatic system and privately liaised with the Italian diplomatic system for her security. If she did this when Indira was alive; if she went as far when Rajiv was alive; if she did this when she was just out of the Congress and out of power, what will she do when put in power?

Or what she will not? Yet she pretends to die for India. This is not real Sonia. The whole western world, not exactly the friends of India, knows about her. But not we, in India. We do not know the real Sonia.

Why do we have rules in the army which prohibit a foreigner, a foreign born person, even though he is a citizen, from occupying certain high-ranking offices in the army? Why do we say that our IPS officers should not be of foreign origin? Why do we say that our IPS officers cannot marry foreigners? Now, herein comes the idea of the modern nation-state. A modern nation-state has a built-in insecurity and that is the reason why it has to secure itself. But can the Prime Minister have a foreign wife? Can the Prime Minister’s son have a foreign wife? Or More so Can We have a Foreigner as Prime Minister?

The Legacy Would Continue:

Rahul, who like Rajiv Gandhi may become the general secretary of the Congress and is being groomed as the successor to her mother, is set to marry a foreign national. So, this demeaning thought will not stop with Ms Gandhi. This can be countered only by arousing the spirit of India which was the drive of the freedom movement. In the first freedom movement, we became free to think and act independently, but we never turned the freedom into Independence. Will the spirit of our freedom movement manifest again to make the free India really independent India?

Will You Join This Movement for Restoring National Pride, Or Would you prefer Someone else to do the Job For You ?

DMK and the loot

DMK is a rouge party with only one ideology loot alone in the state and loot jointly at the centre, in the past 10 years and more when they have been sharing power with various central governments they looted huge amounts of money running in to thousands of crores and they have quietly taken away the wealth to countries like Singapore and within the country they created various business ventures especially in the media and by hook and crook they have taken over the entire cable

T.V distribution business in Tamil Nadu by terrorizing and willfully destroying the entire infrastructure of Hathway limited who was also a MSO in Chennai, now why is the DMK so eagerly distributing millions of colour televisions worth more than Rs.4000 crores to the public irrespective of the incomes, it is only for the single reason that they are the sole MSO and the SUN network of channels which is a about a dozen and almost a monopoly and they want to distribute the T.V’s so that when all the people are addicted to their network they will slowly make it a pay channel, and in this way they are promoting their private business with public money and all including the courts are watching this like a dumb and these people have looted so much that now they have now bought an airlines company SPICEJET for huge sums of money and in this way they can also sneak out many other things to foreign countries, the marans are sharp fellows thats why these people had to patch up with them so that they can run these benami companies professionally and the minister A. Raja is just like a coolie at the railway station and he is looting all the money for his boss who is in Chennai and he may also get few crores out of the thousands of crores of rupees looted from the spectrum scam, so on the face of it raja is the kingpin of the spectrum scam but the real king pin is karunanidhi and earlier he got a lot of moolah even from T.R.Balu who also looted a lot when he was the surface transport minister, and this man who is the C.M is a rouge he got his doctorate degree in spite of objections from students 30-35 years ago and a student was even murdered for that sake, so this is a very short capsule of the REAL DMK and still the idiots of this country vote for such people and party, WHAT A SHAME.

Corruption charges against TN CM's Security officers-Acquired government housing plots for RS 2.25 Crore

Sathyalaya Ramakrishnan reporting from Chennai
Chennai, 04 August, (Asiantribune.com):

A Social activists knocked the Madras High Court (HC) door through a writ petition, seeking direction to the Director of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) to file case against three police security officers to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunandhi allegedly purchased housing plot from Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) by paying of Rs 75 lakh each.

The three police security officers are drawing the salary ranging Rs 10,000 to 12,000 per-months, the petitioner submitted.

The petition was filed in the criminal jurisdiction of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the DVAC to probe into allegations of corruption against three security officers of Mr Karunanidhi.

The petitioner C.Selvaraj, Financial Controller of an Non Governmental Organisation(NGO), Federation of Anti Corruption Team submitted in his writ petition alleged that C.Vinothan, C.Ganesan and P.Pandian are working as security officers of the Chief minister, in possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income and in this regard he had launched a complaint with the DVAC in September 2009.

Even after a lapse of about a year, no enquiry has been ordered by DVAC, Selvaraj contended.

The three security officers are in the rank of Inspectors of Police in the Core Cell, Security Branch CID of Tamil Nadu Police whose carry home salary is between Rs.10,000/- and Rs.12,000/-.

The three security officers, who were allotted a two ground plot in Chennai City under the Government Discretionary Quota, had paid Rs.75,00,000/- in a single payment, for which they do not have legal sources of income, Selvaraj submitted.

While the government of Tamil Nadu has allotted housing plots to Vinothan and Ganesan under the discretionary quota for their ‘unblemished service’ Pandian’s wife Meena got the allotment under ‘social worker’ scheme.

Documents in the possession with a private television channel reveal that all the three Inspectors of Police had paid a sum of Rs.75 lakhs and odd, on 29.03.2008, in a single payment to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board.

Since his complaint to the DVAC had not elicited any response, Selvaraj had sought a direction from the Court to register cases against the three police officers under Section 13 (1) (e) r/w 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The maximum term if convicted would run up to seven years. In his affidavit, Selvaraj avers that the DVAC, which was set up by the Tamil Nadu government as a first organized measure towards tackling corruption in public administration have failed to investigate his complaint which is violative of Article 14 of the Constitution.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing before a division bench on Wednesday.
