Karunanidhi lacks the courage of his convictions

It is time Karunanidhi proved that he is a rationalist, come rain or shine. Invoking rationalism when suits him or abandoning it when it does not, does little credit to this senior politician, particularly in the twilight of his political career.

None denied Karunanidhi the right to stick to his stand that none called Lord Rama existed. There is no proof to that effect. Further it has not been proved that Lord Rama constructed the bridge or was an expert engineer. Rama did not graduate in engineering just as Karunanidhi did not graduate or postgraduate in Tamil although he holds a doctorate from Madras University.

When the DMK assumed power in Tamilnadu, Madras University was arm-twisted into conferring doctorates on personalities chosen by the ruling party. All the same one has to admit that Karunanidhi is an authority on the Tamil language because he holds a doctorate but Rama was not an engineer, because he did not hold a B.E, assuming Rama ever existed. One can extend the logic further and state that Karunanidhi is far, far ahead of Tamil poets like Thiruvalluvar, Avvaiyar, Naaladiar and Nakkeeran. After all, they did not hold a Ph D a la Karunanidhi, did they? (Not long ago, Karunanidhi ensured that he was honoured as the ‘best poet in world’ by his protégés. Surely he is a poet but not the best poet in the world, even if one is talking of only Tamil poets. There was one Kannadasan who was widely regarded as the best Tamil poet after Subramanya Bharathiar. The rationalist in Karunanidhi chose to ignore this fact at the time).

A professed atheist and rationalist, Karunanidhi is entitled to his own views. But a professed atheist and rationalist should also have the courage of his own convictions. Unfortunately when one reads his statements, one is reminded of something as hollow as Dutch courage.

If Valmiki wrote many things about Lord Ram, being a writer himself, Karunanidhi should understand that every writer tends to eulogize about his favourite character. Poets have always tried to be in the good books of masters who are generally puffed up with their own importance.

Under the late Annadurai, the DMK used the late M G Ramachandran (MGR) as a cash cow and vote-catcher. Karunanidhi never tired of calling MGR as a philanthropist par excellence a la ‘Paari’, the renowned philanthropist-king. (This king, during a routine visit to the forest, found a creeper which was struggling to keep itself alive since it had no tree or other support to wind itself around. Moved by its plight, the king decided to leave his chariot behind so the creeper could wind itself around the chariot and grow). But Karunanidhi let the cat out of the bag when his friendship with MGR soured, leading to the split of the DMK in the post-Annadurai phase. “MGR’s announcements of donations have remained just that – announcements; if at all they (the donations) materialised, the money would arrive in dribs and drabs,” he remarked sarcastically. Similarly, Valmiki may have gone overboard in praising Rama but unlike Karunanidhi, did not rue it. Unlike Karunanidhi he did not expect anything in return from Ram. He saw the perfect human being in Ram – a devoted son, an affectionate brother, a duty-conscious king and a doting husband who, in spite of being a king, chose to remain monogamous, much the way Thiruvalluvar of Thirukkural fame has laid down.

The culture of the Rama Bhaktas is condemnable – none supports their burning down a bus which led to the death of a couple of innocent passengers in the process. At the same time, Karunanidhi should think of the so many innocent people, who died during the anti-Hindi agitation in Tamilnadu by self-immolating themselves at the behest of their ‘Thalaivars” like him (leaders), all in the name of opposing the imposition of Hindi! What is the plight of the widowed women and orphaned children they left behind? Has Karunanidhi taken care of all these women and children the way he took care of his own children and women? His own children and grand children pursued education in English medium schools (not Tamil medium schools). Dayanidhi Maran, the former minister and Karunanidhi’s blue-eyed boy until recently, addressed press conferences in Hindi! But the common man was denied this privilege with the result that he could not find jobs in the industrial belts of the north whereas Karunanidhi’s kith and kin went to US to pursue higher education! Born a Teluguite, Karunanidhi (like the other Teluguite Periyar) succeeded in convincing everyone that the Tamils are a fanatic community! Fortunately for him, the Tamils still put up with him!

Karunanidhi tries to obfuscate the issue by stating that vested interests are opposed to the Sethu Samudhram project. While they are all for the project, they want the Rama Setu to be spared at least as a monument if not for mythological or historical reasons, particularly when it is within the realm of possibility. I want the Setu to be spared too for similar reasons and mind you, I am not a theist. If Karunanidhi wants to invoke ‘scientific temper’ to defend himself, I would request him to remind himself that the so-called Aryan-Dravidian is just a figment of his imagination. He may want to cling to it since he needs a plank and I do not grudge it. But DNA tests have proved that the so-called Aryan-Dravidian divide is just a figment of imagination. Unlike in the case of Rama, here is solid proof that the divide does not exist. If Karunanidhi is the rationalist that he claims he is, he should immediately stop exploiting this plank.

Alternatively he should prove that he has the courage of his own convictions, a la Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari (CR). CR publicly advocated capitalism and fearlessly criticised Nehruvian socialism. Jawaharlal Nehru responded by calling CR a stooge of USA. What is happening today? We are practising capital-ism although we euphemistically call it globalisation. When Sardar Patel advocated linguistic division of India, CR responded by commenting that it was an immature solution from an immature politician! What is happening today? Indians have become foreigners within their own country. The country should have been divided not along linguistic lines but along geographical contiguities. Of course, it is not my argument that CR was always right. But remember one needed guts in those days to take on the likes of Patel and Nehru but CR did just that because he had the courage of his own convictions. He risked becoming unpopular by doing so but all the same held on to his views since he was convinced that his views were right.

The 'sacred thread' that matters in the 'holy-Dravidian' land!

'Why scared ash and sacred thread in this holy land where all religions coexist in harmony?' asked the Tamilnadu Chief Minister Karunandhi through one of his 'poems', which he writes everyday in his party organ 'Murasoli'. 'Truth is God and those who cannot understand it are ignorant', wrote Karunanidhi and added, 'the face-off between atheists and theists is useless'. It has always been the habit of Karunandhi to ridicule only Hindus and their rituals & customs and his atheistic credentials are so selective that, he has never shown the 'courage' to ridicule the practices of other religions.

Hinduism is the only religion, which has adopted Atheism as a part of it and this is the only religion in the world having a place for even atheists. Hinduism has established its supremacy through many debates in its scriptures and the excellent arguments between Bhagwan Rama and Jabali Munivar was an apt example for it. But one cannot expect such 'truths' in Karunanidhi's Ramayana, which questions the qualifications of Rama, calls him drunkard and addresses Sita as the sister of Rama!

Even while ridiculing Hindus, their culture, customs & rituals, Karunanidhi has a penchant for insulting Brahmins. This must be the hundredth time he has commented about the 'sacred thread'. It all started with the great social 'deformer' E V Ramasamy Naicken, called as 'Periyar', who applied 'anti-Brahminism' as a strategy to promote his racist outfit 'Dravida Kazhagam' through the concept of Aryan Invasion theory concocted by westerners, thereby alienating the 'Tamils' from the 'Hindu' fold. He projected Brahmins as Aryans and poisoned the minds of the gullible masses. Quite often he used to convey the message of racism with Dravidian compassion through the statement, 'If a Brahmin and snake are seen together, the Brahmin must be killed first!' He was such a hypocrite that during times of crisis, he preferred to consult the Brahmin Rajaji on even personal matters.

Annadurai, who joined EVR's Dravidian Movement, was also a strong critic of Brahmins and he continued that sickening legacy even after exiting from DK and starting his own DMK. The DK & DMK played havoc in the society and persecuted the poor Brahmin community, who do not even form 3% of the state's population. The Dravidian goons used to attack the Brahmin Priests quite often and cut their sacred threads and tufts. M Karunanidhi and K Veeramani inherited this ugly legacy from Anna and EVR and both of them are still attempting to use it as a political strategy (whether it helps or not is different) and also to have sadistic pleasure. The recent addition to this anti-Brahmin lobby are Thirumavalavan's VCK and Ramadoss's PMK, who fully utilise their TV Channels 'Tamizhan' TV and 'Makkal' TV respectively, to carry out their anti-Brahmin propaganda.

Though the anti-Brahmin tirade of the Dravidian leaders will go for pages if written, a few examples of latest episodes would suffice to expose the Dravidian psyche behind the politics of anti-Brahminism. With the advent of the DMK Government in May 2006, the state has been continuously witnessing, or rather, experiencing 'irrational' rationalism of the 'Dravidian' order in many issues. The Dravidian leaders in general and Karunanidhi and Veeramani in particular are extremely and irrationally eloquent in approach, analysis and assault. It is done with a sort of animosity towards Sanskrit in the guise of love towards Tamil, with an enmity to Brahmins in the guise of love towards the so-called Shudras and with hostility to Hindus in the name of love towards Tamils.

As the Chief Minister is supposed to be the Head of the State for all the people living in the state irrespective of their caste, creed or colour, his irrational rationalism has been a subject of discussion here, more so because of the right that has been obtained from voting him to power. While his 'brilliance' and 'eloquence' on Hinduism has been discussed and exposed many times in the past, his obsession on the 'sacred thread' needs an exclusive and special focus.

After promulgating a law for appointment of 'Archagas' ( Temple Priests) from all castes, the DMK government opened six training centres to train the boys for 'one full year' and to place them in any one of the temples controlled by HR & CE department in the state. Though the response for the training centres has been poor and inadequate, the government has reportedly come out with an order saying that the trainees and the new recruits must not wear the 'poonal', the 'sacred thread'.

When the opposition leaders and a few alliance partners demanded a probe in the 'telephone tapping' issue and asked for his resignation on 'moral' grounds, citing the precedence set by the Late Ramakrishna Hegde, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Karunanidhi came out with a 'gem' of a statement by saying, 'What to do, this Chief Minister does not wear the 'sacred thread' and he was not born in the caste represented by God's 'face', but was born in the caste identified with the God's 'feet'. The fact of the matter is that, the Chief Minister, who represents the 'lowest' part, the 'feet' of the Almighty, has the 'power' to order tapping of telephone talks of those leaders, who represent the 'higher' parts of the Almighty! If any one attempts to find the 'rationale' behind the CM's statement, then he or she would be dubbed as irrational and idiotic! Here again, he used the issue to distort the Hindu religious scriptures for his own convenience to denigrate the Brahmin community.

When recently the Supreme Court emphasised the exclusion of the 'creamy layer' in its verdict of staying the implementation of 27% reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, Karunanidhi and Veeramani could not digest it and said, 'how could two or three persons decide the fate of millions'? 'The two Judges who issued a stay order were 'thread-wearing' Aryans!'

When Karunanidhi ridiculed the Hindu custom of having Tilaks on forehead and wearing sacred threads in his party organ last week, the Janatha Party President Dr Subramaniam Swamy, through a press statement, asked him to concentrate on good governance instead of pontificating and mouthing sarcasm on what people should wear and what they should not. Dr Swamy has said, 'Karunanidhi's latest nugget of 'wisdom' is in asking Brahmins not to put on the sacred thread and women not to affix the bindi ('Pottu' in Tamil) on their forehead to create a feeling of equality among the people. Soon he may dare to ask the Sikhs not to put on their turban, grow their hair, and Muslim women not to go around in 'burqas''. Refering to Karunanidhi's 'hugely stupid' comments on Lord Rama, and the state of undress of statues installed inside temples, Dr Swamy said, ' these latest inane remarks make me demand that Karunanidhi undergo a medical examination to determine if he is still in his senses since Article 164 of the Constitution as interpreted by the Supreme Court in 2001 requires the Chief Minister to be of sound mind' and added, 'If Karunanidhi means what he says, he should first stop sporting the yellow shawl which he hangs around his neck to ward off evil spirits, which incidentally was recommended to him by his Brahmin Yoga teacher'. It may be recalled that over a period of time, Karunanidhi has given a number of 'rational' explanations for his sporting the yellow shawl, not even one convincing enough!

Karunanidhi and Veeramani have never shown courage in questioning the customs of minority communities. They will issue 'greetings' for Christmas and Ramzan but not for Deepavali. They will talk of 'Tamil' Archanas in Temples, but never demand Tamil worship in Mosques despite the fact that there are a number of Muslims in the state, who do not know either Urdu or Arabic. They will question the sanctity and authority of Hindu calendar, but not the English or Arabic calendar! While voicing support for LTTE in the guise of 'Srilankan Tamils', they will not ask why all those Tamil leaders liquidated by LTTE happened to be 'Hindus'.

Close on the heels of Karunanidhi's diatribe against the Hindu custom of sporting Thilak and wearing sacred threads, Veeramani exposed his intelligence by saying, 'All the newspapers and magazines run by Brahmins are writing against Sri Lankan Tamils'. Taking strong exception to this statement Dr Subramaniam Swamy has said that Veramani has again relapsed into his anti-Brahmin phobia and warned, 'by such fulminations Veeramani has committed cognizable offences under three Sections of the IPC and two Sections of the Unlawful Activities Act, and therefore can be prosecuted and sent to prison any time'. Dr Swamy also said, 'over the centuries, when Brahmins have been targeted, they have been helped by Kshatriyas, Yadavs, and other backward class people to finish off Asuras and Rakshasas. Recently, the BSP leader aligned with the Brahmins of UP and trounced her opponents. Hence, Veeramani should realise that the days of DK freely victimising Brahmins are over'. Dr Swamy, through his press statement, has reminded Veeramani that his three-storey Periyar Memorial Building near the Delhi Airport was demolished by the Delhi Administration in July 2001, as it had become a transit camp for LTTE infiltrators and that he could do nothing to prevent it, despite the support of the Congress leaders and the DMK. He has also said in his press statement, 'in the Trichy Sessions Court a case of attempt to murder me is still pending, and he can be convicted any time in that case. If Veeramani cares so much for the LTTE, he should migrate to the jungles of Jaffna and fight for them there. In India, there is no sympathy for them'.

This sustained hate campaign against a miniscule community, which is not even 3% in the state, can be attributed to the 'inferiority complex' of those who were carrying out this campaign. The 'Dravidian' psyche is driven by this inferiority complex, which might have also been the caused by 'personal' experiences in the past! Whatever said and done, playing such racist games and fascist politics will be dangerous to the peace and progress of the society. There is nothing wrong in being rational and following rationalism, but there should not be room for 'irrational' ideas. They must understand that 'Periyar' is a failed brand and that there are no takers for anti-Brahminism now-a-days. One need not be a 'thread wearer' to understand this fundamental fact.

Kamaraj had never worn a 'sacred thread' to realise the importance of primary education, but came out with a brilliant 'noon-meal' scheme to improve the attendance of children in schools of rural areas. Despite wearing a 'sacred thread', Rajaji could reveal the importance of entrepreneurship by advocating for education through vocational courses. It all depends on character and morality. It doesn't mean that one should wear a 'thread' to show morality. Kamaraj had never worn a 'sacred thread' and Rajaji was wearing one. Both of them have proved that the 'thread' had got nothing to do with 'morality' in public life. Morality is something, which is connected to 'Arivu' that is Knowledge and not 'Paguththarivu' that is rationalism! 'Paguththarivu' gels well with 'Immorality', which forms the foundation principle for the concept of 'Dravidianism' standing on the pillars of 'Kazhagams'. The continuance of these irrational utterances would finally lead to 'Asthamanam' (End) of the 'Paguththarivu Pagalavan' (Rational sun)!

Action against Uma Shankar I.A.S. by DMK

M_Id_158350_front_lead

Hats off to you, Mr. Uma Shankar.

Dear Friends,

The highest post for an 'Educated' , is Indian Administrative Service. An IAS post is considered to be the Number One post in India, the post of High esteem. Although the post is unique in its nature, neither the parents nor the children do have courage to dream of having it as an ambition of life. Because it is not so easy as of becoming a Lawyer, Doctor or an Engineer. Every one can not burn the midnight oil as the way IAS aspirants do before getting the post. After getting the post the way they suffer under politicians is inexplicable. It is like 'Donkey rules on Horse'. The dominance of less educated and less intellectual over more educated and more intellectual. The politicians misuse their power with these high profiles. Very few IAS men only have guts to face the political axe. The brave IAS men would keep their fight with politicians knowing their personal damage at the end.

Mr. Uma Shankarji is also such an IAS officer, who has been controversial during his tenure. His case is known by most of the people. The DMK government , axed him down by showing a trivial reason. Finding no proven faults against him, the government at last suspended on fake community certificate, which should have been done initially.

This shows atrocity / brutality of the government against the educated working folk. It is politicians drama to realise their whims and fancies in the government.

We the common people, should raise the voice against such atrocity.

News taken from the internet sources for your perusal

Senior IAS officer C. Umashankar has been suspended by the Tamil Nadu Government on the charge of producing a false community certificate to claim SC quota during his civil services selection.

A 1990 batch officer, Umashankar, who was Director of Small Savings, has been replaced by A.C. Mohandoss on Wednesday consequent to the suspension, official sources said.

The Central Government and the Union Public Service Commission had been informed about the suspension, they said.

Umashankar was a Dalit Christian and not entitled for SC quota, the sources said, adding an inquiry had been ordered.

Umashankar, as the Chairman of the Arasu Cable TV Corporation, set up by the state government in 2008 to run cable TV business, had recommended nationalisation of Maran brothers owned Sumangali Cable Vision, alleging that the company was sabotaging Arasu Cable TV network.

He is facing charges of accumulating disproportionate wealth. But on a petition by him, the Madras High Court has last month stayed the probe by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

He had also claimed disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him to deny him promotion as Joint Secretary to Union Government after he submitted the proposal to nationalise Sumangali Cable Vision.

Umashankar had also exposed irregularities in the construction of cremation sheds in Madurai District when the AIADMK was in power. The DMK government, after assuming office in 1996, registered a case against AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa and the then local administration minister T.M. Selvaganpathy, now a DMK Rajya Sabha member. However, both were acquitted by the Madras High Court.

IAS officer C Umashankar, who took on the ruling DMK and Maran brothers, has approached Madras High Court, stating that he was being victimised for initiating action against persons close to the government.

Presently Commissioner of the State Small Savings Department, Umashankar approached the court on Wednesday to stay a vigilance inquiry into charges that he had amassed wealth through illegal means.

As Chairman of government-owned cable TV distribution agency, Arasu Cable TV Corporation, Umashankar had recommended that the state take over the Sun TV Group-owned Sumangali Cable Vision and suggested penal action against a Minister for destroying the property of ACTVC worth several crore rupees in 2009. This, he said, has led to his victimisation.

“The government is interested only in promoting the cause of the corrupt and the powerful,” Umashankar alleged in his petition, adding that prior to that posting, he was Managing Director of the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot), where he had detected a case where a private technology company, in which the government agency had significant share, had slipped out of government control.

Like the officers of Indian Administrative Services the officers of India Police Services (IPS) have same way to go after taking VRS and retirement. Number of such officers get extension and other jobs in government set ups while other get the jobs in private sector. The rules are same for them as well as for IAS. If they are retired and they have taken VRS they have to take prior clearance from Ministry of Home Affairs before joining any commercial appointment within one year of taking VRS/retirement. Though the number of such IPS officers is less than IAS officers but even then they are in sizable number.

According to Information received under RTI Act from the MHA by India Today, since 2000 there were as much as 26 officers, and most them were high profile officers, those joined various privates sector assignments. These include former Delhi Police Commissioner T.R. Kakkar who has joined JP Industries according to MHA. Like him, Ajay Raj Sharma also joined private job. The officers who have been accomodated in various boards, councils, committees, tribunals of the governments are not included in this list.

But interestingly, the MHA hesitates to give such data of IPS officers. The IPS is among three services which are called All India Services. Others are IAS and Indian Forest Service. But it is irony that the MHA does not maintain complete information about these officers. While the Department of Personnel and Training shares any requested data under RTI act, the MHA keeps passing the buck on such applications. Obviously, as a cadre controlling authority the MHA must have the data of such officers but when India Today filed such RTI to the MHA to know the details of officers who have resigned, terminated, took VRS since 2000. The CPIO of the ministry replied, "MHA is not maintaining such list of IPS officers who have left service since January 2000. The information may be obtained from their respective state cadres." On another such request they further clarified, "Consolidated information of IPS officers who have resigned, terminated, suspended from service is not maintained by this ministry."

It is interesting at the time when the Minister of Home Affairs P. Chidambaram has talked about shortage of IPS officers in the country. He mas made such statement in last winter session of parliament as well. The CPIO may be true in her reply but as a cadre controlling authority for IPS officers, one can expect from MHA to have data of IPS officers resigning, taking VRS and terminated and facing various other actions. But the list shows that many IPS officers join the private sector with lucrative salary after retirement/ VRS. However, this is not the complete list since many officers may have joined the companies after completing one year of their retirement/VRS. Among around 3300 IPS officers of the country, around two dozen are under suspension for their misdeeds.

DMK Hisotry - a recap

Though Karunanidhi may say he had no links with the LTTE till he is blue in face, the fact he used it as a political weapon just cannot be denied

Karunanidhi

Some months ago, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi summoned Law Minister Aladi Aruna to his room.

"Can't we get Subbulakshmi off?" he asked.

It was a tricky problem. Subbulakshmi Jagdeesan, a former MLA of Karunanidhi's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, had been jailed pending trial, charged with murder.

In a state where political conspiracies and murder frame-ups are routine, Aladi Aruna might even have found a way out. But the killing Jagadeesan was suspected to be involved in was no ordinary one.

With the war against the Tamils in Sri Lanka spilling over to India, clashes between Tamil rival groups were being reported every day. The signing of the Indo-Sri Lanka accord in 1987 had been expected to defuse tension in the north-east part of the island. Ironically, it had sharpened rivalries. And India was witnessing bloody evidence of this.

The 1991 murder of Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front leader Padmanabha was reported on the front pages of all Indian newspapers. Padmanabha's party had been installed in power in the north-eastern provincial council by the Indian Peace Keeping Force, after ousting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Presumably, as an act of revenge, Padmanabha was shot dead in Madras's crowded Kodambakkam area. His killers drove off in a white Maruti van.

When the police investigated and found the killers, one Shantan implicated Jagadeesan. Shantan told the sessions court he had used Jagadeesan's farmhouse as his hideout, where he had kept his wireless.

The discovery of the wireless and intercepts of conversations between him and the LTTE was the evidence that the police used to arrest Jagadeesan and her husband. A case was registered under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act against both. Which meant no bail.

This was the problem Karunanidhi was posing before his law minister.

"Don't worry," Aladi Aruna told him that day, "The trial is on. We won't have to do anything. The judge will acquit her as there is no evidence."

Sure enough, Jagadeesan was acquitted. And Shantan, a co-accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder, was sentenced to a prison term.

What does all of this have to do with the current political crisis?

Simply, that though Karunanidhi and the DMK may deny their LTTE connection till they're blue in the face, though the court may decide that the evidence against them is insufficient, the fact that they used the LTTE and Tamil movement as a political weapon is something they just cannot deny.

Events caught up with Karunanidhi. After the tabling of the Jain Commission report, the demand grew louder and more insistent that the DMK leave the United Front.

"How can we support a government which harbours the killers of Rajiv Gandhi?" asked senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee.

"I K Gujral is determined he will not let the DMK walk out of the UF. He would rather go to the President with the resignation of his government," said a senior minister in Gujral's government, equally emphatic.

And at Parliament's central hall, waiters once again had something to do. MPs crowded there for coffee and sandwiches, discussing the possibility of another mid-term election.

All because of a man in dark glasses.

Early this year, Mani Ratnam's film Iruvar poignantly chronicled Karunanidhi's rise and rise in the DMK. Like most early Dravidian leaders, Karunanidhi started his career as a dialogue writer in Tamil theatre and gradually moved over to cinema in the mid-1950s.

A school dropout from Thanjavur, he was drawn to the Dravidian movement started by Periyar. Karunanidhi mastered Tamil literature. He was known to recite Subramania Bharati's poems and turn them around in order to infuse the movement with poetic passion.

His mastery over the language made him an excellent script writer, and enabled him to make telling comments on the social evils prevalent in those days. Sivaji Ganesan's Parasakthi, for instance, is, even today, hailed for its brilliant court scene. But what put Karunanidhi in the big league was his script for M G Ramachandran's super-hit Mantri kumari.

Karunanidhi's considerable skill was not just confined to the silver screen. The legendary Periyar, too, made good used of the young man's writing talents for his anti-brahmin rhetoric.

When the Congress government of the late 1950s tried to make Hindi a compulsory subject in schools, Karunanidhi got an opportunity to play a political role. He created a distinctive Tamil identity for himself by being in the forefront of the anti-Hindi agitation. This was the root of the Tamil movement which developed into something of an assertion of 'nationalism.'

Karunanidhi's exploits forced the DMK, led by C N Annadurai, to sit up and take notice. He was rewarded with a party ticket for the 1961 assembly election and won from Thanjavur by defeating a local Congress landlord.

In 1967, when the first DMK government came to power in the state under Annadurai, Karunanidhi was made the public works department minister. He proved to be an excellent administrator. There was no stopping him now. Having established himself as the No 2 in the DMK, he grabbed the top job when Annadurai died of cancer in 1969. His accession put paid to the hopes of senior leaders like Nedunchezian, Mathiazhagan and Anbazhagan.

MGR At the crucial juncture, it was MGR who helped Karunanidhi win over his party MLAs. It is said that it was the latter who first spotted MGR's charismatic presence which later became a hype in an electorate fed on filmy larger-than-life heroes. MGR had earlier, in the 1967 state assembly election, actively campaigned for the DMK. But then, senior leaders, including Annadurai, were not very keen about him. But now, Karunanidhi recognised his potential and cashed in on that.

As chief minister, Karunanidhi was far more efficient than Annadurai. And, unlike his mentor, totally corrupt. By 1971, his regime had institutionalised corruption. Gone were the lofty Dravidian principles.

That year Karunanidhi teamed up with Indira Gandhi's Congress to oust veteran Congress (O) leader K Kamaraj. The DMK-Congress alliance swept the assembly poll and Parliament election. Kamaraj's party was routed, getting only 15 seats in a House of 234. The DMK got a record 184.

But power and arrogance went to Karunanidhi's head. By 1972, he had fallen out with his star campaigner MGR. The story goes that MGR wanted to be a minister in his cabinet, but the DMK supremo said a firm 'No'.

"MGR realised he was being used by a corrupt state administration, but it was too late. He was expelled from the DMK. And he went on to form his own party -- the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam."

In 1976, Karunanidhi's government was dismissed on corruption charges. The Sarkaria Commission was appointed to investigate the charges.

In the 1977 election, MGR had his revenge as his party swept the polls with 130 seats, while the DMK managed to get only 48 seats. By now, the DMK had fallen out with Indira Gandhi, who herself was in the political wilderness.

But when she came back to power at the Centre in 1980, Karunanidhi ran back to her and got the MGR government dismissed. He also managed to wind up the Sarkaria Commission which had severely indicted his government of corruption.

But that didn't help matters. In the assembly election that followed, the AIADMK again swept the polls with 129 seats, while the DMK managed a paltry 38.

Immediately, in a politically correct move, Indira Gandhi dumped Karunanidhi and latched on to MGR, who was waiting with the red carpet rolled out. He was also doing the right thing -- namely, keeping the powers that be in Delhi happy, fearing imposition of President's rule.

For the next 13 years, as long as MGR was around, Karunanidhi could never take this place. In the 1984 assembly poll, held in tandem with the Parliament election, there was a double sympathy wave working against Karunanidhi -- Indira had been assassinated and MGR was in a New York hospital after a paralytic attack.

Again the DMK ended up in the Opposition with only 24 seats.

But, in his own way, Karunanidhi kept the DMK flag flying. At the grass-roots level he was still popular. He came back to power in 1989 when, after MGR's death, the ADMK split. The election was a watershed in Tamil Nadu politics as the three major parties, the DMK, AIADMK (Jayalalitha) and the Congress, led by G K Moopanar, contested a three-cornered fight.

The DMK swept the polls with 151 seats. The AIADMK got 29, and the Congress just 20.
