“Congress and DMK Alliance : "A threat to Religious harmony"

“Congress, DMK garner minority votes through welfare schemes”

tn

The Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cannot accuse the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being communal when they try to garner the votes of minorities through welfare schemes that leave out deserving sections in the majority community, State president of the BJP Pon. Radhakrishnan said here on Sunday.

Leading a demonstration by his party to demand Centrally-sponsored pre-matriculation scholarship for school students for Hindus also, Mr. Radhakrishnan said there were poor students in all communities. Therefore, any scholarship or other forms of assistance for education should not be limited to students of a few communities.

Mr. Radhakrishnan rejected the argument of the Congress and its ally, DMK, that five prominent minority communities (Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis) were being covered under the scheme.

While the others were limited in number and present in very few areas, Muslims and Christians were spread across the country in substantial numbers. Therefore, this scheme largely benefited them. Though there were many poor students among Hindus, this scheme was not being extended to them.

Besides, norms relating to the distribution of scholarship were not being followed. Scholarships were being given to more than the prescribed number of students.

A massive demonstration would be staged in Kanyakumari on June 25 to demand the inclusion of poor students among the Hindus.

Some parties asked whether the BJP still existed in the State. But, the response from the public to its protests over the rise in prices of essential commodities and fuel only pointed at its strong presence, he claimed.

Prajwala - is an non-governmental organization run by Sunitha Krishnan

Prajwala

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PRAJWALA

Prajwala is an non-governmental organization in Hyderabad, India, opposed to forced prostitution and sex trafficking. It was founded by Dr Sunitha Krishnan.

Dr Sunitha Krishnan has committed her life as a fulltime volunteer in Prajwala. A mental health professional, she has done extensive research and is essentially a Fieldpractitioner. She has been instrumental in rescuing hundr -eds of children from severely abusive conditions and restoring childhood to them. Sunitha Krishnan is making it possible for India's government and citizen organizations to manage jointly a range of protective and rehabilita -tive services for children who have been trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation. As of 2007, Prajwala operated 17 schools in Hyderabad as part of Krishnan's strategy to remove women from brothels by first giving their children educational and vocational opportunities outside of the red-light districts. In addition to her local work, she also has tried to increase pressure on foreign governments who, she says, fail to adequately enforce laws against sex-trafficking and sexual predation. For example, she says that although Americans comprise 25% of sex tourists in Asia, the US government does too little to prosecute them.

The institution

The philosophy of Prajwala evolved based on the need of women and children who are victims of trafficking. Prajwala emerged as an anti-trafficking organization, which believes in preventing women and children from entering prostitution, which is the worst form of sexual slavery. The organization is actively involved in second-generation prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, restoration and social reintegration of victims of trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. These objectives are achieved through a multi-pronged approach, as trafficking is a multi-dimensional problem. During the process of implementation of various programs to combat causes of trafficking PRAJWALA evolved need based interventions and methodologies which are the mile stones for the organization and breakthrough in the sector of anti-trafficking.

For 12-year-old Laila, it was a never ending saga of pain and fear. Enslaved in a cellar for three years, she was subjected to physical abuse and mental torture by a number of men. She can barely recall her childhood, the time when she was fondly called Laxmi in her hometown in Andhra Pradesh. Laila was rescued by Prajwala, an anti-trafficking organisation, from a red light area in Mumbai. Prajwala is a movement started by Sunitha Krishnan, a health care professional in Hyderabad. Sunitha is full of stories of many such girls who were rescued and brought back into society. “Even as a young girl of 16, I wanted to work for the cause of children and women. I was arrested for protesting against the 1995 Miss World contest held in Bangalore, and had to serve a two-month sentence. After being released, I decided to move out of Bangalore and settle down in Hyderabad,” 35-year-old Sunitha, co-founder and chief functionary, Prajwala, says. In 1996, sex workers living in Mehboob ki Mehandi, a red light area in Hyderabad, were evacuated. As a result, thousands of women, who were caught in the clutches of prostitution, were left homeless. Having found a like-minded person in Brother Jose Vetticatil, a missionary, Sunitha Krishnan started a transition school at the vacated brothel to prevent the second generation from being trafficked. “We began in a small way by responding to the plight of the mothers. Things were not easy during the initial days. Although the women were concerned about their children, they were not ready for any kind of partnership. I made a calculated move to have a win-win situation. ‘You give me information about the destitute women trapped in prostitution, and I will provide education to your child’ was how I convinced the them, and it worked well,” she says.

Today, Prajwala runs over 17 transition centres in different areas of Andhra Pradesh for the sex workers’ children. Over 5,000 children have benefited from the second generation prevention programme.

The organisation, so far, has rescued more than 2,500 victims with the help of the information provided by its partners and through police intervention. The organisation has 80 members in India and 25 members abroad.

“In order to empower the rescued, we started to train them in carpentry, welding, printing and stationery material, and also in the manufacture of wooden and steel furniture, besides training them as housekeepers to work in hotels and hospitals,” Sunitha says. “So far, we have provided rehabilitation to nearly 1,500 girls, but couldn't succeed in doing so in 1,000 other cases. I don't think I failed but probably I didn't get the desired results. For instance, we rescued a 20-year girl from a Pune red light area and offered a Rs 6,000-per month salary package to her to work for us. She rejected the offer and went back. After 10 days, she called me and said she realised her mistake and was willing to work for the cause. Today, she is one of our main informers. Now, can this be called a failure,” she says. Sunitha Krishnan is supported by Rajesh Touch River, a film maker known for his internationally-acclaimed movie In the Name of Buddha. He has made more than a dozen short films for Prajwala. One of these films Anamika (nameless) is now a part of the curricula of the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy and the National Police Academy.

“Unlike many other organisations, Prajwala is not a project. It is a need-based organisation. I will close down Prajwala the day society stops treating women and children as objects of exploitation,” proclaims Sunitha Krishnan.

Keeping hope alive Real-life hero - Sunitha Krishnan

This woman of steel, all of four feet six inches, is keeper of the eternal flame of hope for more than 1,000 children in Hyderabad. Winner of several prestigious awards for her work, Sunitha Krishnan, who has her roots in Palakkad, was in the city to meet architect G. Shankar to draw a plan for a permanent building for her “children and other survivors” of human trafficking, on 10 acres of land on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

As co-founder of Prajwala (which means ‘eternal flame’ in Sanskrit), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that runs 17 transitional schools and three shelters (two for children and one for women called Astha Nivas and Asha Niketan respectively) in Andhra Pradesh for “abused children and former victims of commercial sexual exploitation,” Sunitha has her hands full. But she says she cannot rest when she knows that each day, many girl children are trafficked all over India.

Rescue operations

“Each minute counts. Sometimes, we get information about minor girls, some as young as three, and by the time, we marshal the man power and police protection to mount a rescue operation, it would be too late to prevent the child from being sold into the flesh trade,” says Sunitha regretfully, speaking in a mix of fluent Malayalam and English.

The only time her cheerful countenance falls is when she recalls rescue operations that could not save a child, from the clutches of the flesh trade. Even numerous assaults, some of which have left permanent scars (her hearing on the right is partially impaired and her left arm cannot be straightened) have not deterred her from rescue operations.

It has only steeled her resolve to carry her crusade against human trafficking. “I have never let obstacles of any kind stop me from helping people from less privileged strata of society; something I used to do as a school student. In those days, I used to teach children in my neighbourhood. But, in my teens, when I was living with my parents Raju Krishnan and Nalini Krishnan in Bangalore, my attention turned towards women who were sexually exploited,” recalls Sunitha.

Her radical views and work estranged her from her parents and Sunitha completed her graduation and post-graduation (psychiatric social work) on her own.

She decided to live amongst the “sexually exploited” and gradually gained their confidence. “It was an uphill task as they were very hostile initially. But eventually I was allowed into their secretive but painful lives of constant abuse and fear. In 1991, I managed to rescue a mentally-impaired 12-year-old who was being molested by men in broad daylight. That gained me respect in the eyes of those tough but vulnerable women. But I still lacked focus,” says Sunitha.

Her radical protests against the 1996 Miss World pageant in Bangalore led to a two-month term in prison. In the meantime, a chance acquaintance with Brother Varghese Theknath made her move to Hyderabad where she met Brother Jose Vetticatil, who was then Director of Boys’ Town.

“Jose was my mentor, friend and guide and we joined hands to help women in Mehboob-ki-Mehendi, a red light area in Hyderabad,” she says.

Prajwala

However, it was in 1996 that the seeds of Prajwala was first sown in a small building in Mehoob ki Mehendi. “Following a court order, the police evicted the women in the red light area and hundreds of women were thrown out in the streets. Many took their own lives. Their only dream was to see their children escape their fate. That was how I set up the first school with five children in an empty brothel provided by their mothers,” narrates Sunitha. Soon desperate mothers began to make a beeline for the school. They also began to inform Sunitha about minors in the red light area and that motivated Sunitha to launch her rescue missions.

Many of the children were HIV positive and each had horror stories to relate. But the children amazed Sunitha with their resilience. Many of them made their way back to school and went on to become teachers themselves, says Sunitha, every bit the proud matriarch. The children are educated up to class seven by the teachers in Astha Nivas, and then they are enrolled in regular schools, a task that is also difficult.

“Our aim is to get the children into mainstream life. Unfortunately, the recognition our work has brought us has sometimes stood in the way of the children getting admission in schools. The school authorities know that children from Prajwala are survivors of human trafficking, some of them might be HIV positive … and so some school authorities insist on tests and try to keep these children out on one pretext or the other,” explains Sunitha.

But Sunitha has always challenged the odds, be it financial, physical, emotional or spiritual, and won. With the help of Father Jose, they went on to start a centre to train the older women in printing, carpentry, masonry and so on and today Prajwala Enterprises is a Rs. 1-crore small industry that employs mostly “survivors.” Although Brother Jose passed away, Sunitha has continued the work they began together.

Finance and space have always been a problem for Prajwala. “At one point, I had to sell my personal belongings to pay the salary of our staff. But I managed to pull along. Many of the awards have helped but lack of funds is a perennial problem,” admits Sunitha.

The latest was when Prajwala was requested to vacate the building where they were running three schools. “I was at my wits’ end trying to raise the money when a stranger I met at the airport gave me a cheque for Rs.35 lakhs. He turned out to be M.H Dalmia, the owner of Dalmia Cements. Philanthropists like him have kept Prajwala ticking. We managed to buy a plot and now the goal is to raise enough money for a building to house all the survivors,” says Sunitha.

“But I have failed to groom a second tier of leadership for the organisation and that is my aim now…” adds Sunitha. When the word impossible does not exist in her vocabulary, one is sure that this woman of steel will achieve that too.

Sunitha is married to filmmaker Rajesh Touch River who has also made several films for Prajwala. One of the films, ‘Anamika,’ is now a part of the curricula of the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy and the National Police Academy, says Sunitha. For her efforts to stop human trafficking, Sunitha has won awards like the Stree Shakti Puraskar, Perdita Huston Human Rights Award, World of Children Award, National award for child welfare and CNN IBN real hero award. But her real award, she avers is when a child she rescues goes on to light the flame of hope in other children.

Sunitha Krishnan - A must know personality
