Charges against DMK regime unassailable: Jayalalithaa

“Higher allocation will not make Tamil Nadu developed State”

“Karunanidhi failed to take steps to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal”

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's failure to give a proper reply to her allegations clearly proved that her arguments against the DMK government were unassailable.

In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she was justified in describing the DMK government as a minority regime, because it did not have adequate strength of 118 MLAs in the Assembly to form a government on its own. “If the DMK had included the Congress it could be called a coalition government.”

Responding to Mr. Karunanidhi's argument that more funds had been allotted to various departments in the State, she said higher allocation of funds would not make Tamil Nadu a developed State.

For instance, she said the estimated cost of the Hogenakkal Combined Drinking Water Project, conceived during MGR's regime, was Rs.118 crore. Now, the DMK government had announced in the budget that it would cost Rs.1929 crore. This was because of inflation.

“Moreover allocation for every project will automatically increase when there is a growth in revenue generation. This cannot be called an achievement of the government.”

Deteriorating law and order

As regards the claim of Chief Minister that the allocation for the Police Department had gone up to Rs.2,885 crore as against the Rs.1,336 crore allotted during the AIADMK government, she said by his claim, Mr. Karunanidhi was implicitly admitting that law and order was deteriorating.

Ms. Jayalalithaa accused the Chief Minister of conveniently suppressing the fact that kuruvai cultivation in the State, that would normally cover 3 lakh hectares, had been reduced to 53,000 hectares. The area covered in Cauvery delta so far was just 14,000 hectares.

She alleged that Mr. Karunanidhi had failed to take steps to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. On the other hand her government had ensured notification of the interim award of the tribunal in the gazette, besides winning the case in the Supreme Court against the law enacted by Karnataka against the interim award.

She said the Chief Minister was not able to answer her allegations on the rise in prices of essential commodities and yarn, drop in power generation, unemployment and illegal sand quarrying.
